Sign Language in Nunavut Overview

Sign Language in Nunavut

Presents a summary of a project which documents and promotes the use of sign language in Nunavut. Refers to booklets, posters, and videos that have been developed to illustrate the use of Inuit Sign Language (ISL). The place of ISL in the context of the Nunavut Official Languages Act and the Language Protection Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom is also featured. Reference is made to the recommendations of the historic focus group symposium (2006) involving Deaf Nunavummiut and their families from many regions of Nunavut. The affirmation of ISL by the Government of Nunavut through the sign language interpretation of the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut is also described.
